The museum was established in 1976 by Kurt Mathisson. The museum operates as a nonprofit organization. The museum lies in a 24,000 square foot area with a collection of about 12,000 art objects. It is a center in celebration of the Swedish American culture and history providing educational programs as an outreach to the public.
