The Doris Duke Foundation For Islamic Art was established in 1988. It is dedicated to the culture and arts of Islam. Doris Duke is a philanthropist, art collector, horticulturist and the daughter of a very wealthy tobacco tycoon. The Shangri La houses the Islamic Art collection which began construction in 1937. It was designed by Marion Sims Wyeth. The artifacts and objects in the collection total to nearly 3,500.
